Lecture abstract:
The presentation will begin with an introduction to the research topics I was involved in the recent years, outlining my up-to-date publication record. A brief overview of the preliminary studies from the NCN Miniatura project will be given, focused on the investigations of phase equilibria in the Al-Cu-Fe-B/Si system, with emphasis on the alloys exhibiting the magnetocaloric effect. Then, objectives of the recently completed NCN Sonatina project will be presented, discussing the synthesis and property investigations of magnetic quasicrystals and approximants. A short literature review will highlight the current relevance of these research problems. Results confirming the achievement of project goals will be presented through two works currently under review, devoted to Rare-Earth-doped monocrystalline quasicrystals and shock wave propagation. Next, the structure of obtained single grain approximants will be discussed. In the second part, results from studies of magnetic properties of selected multiphase lanthanide-doped alloys will be shown. Then I provide a brief introduction to the Nitrogen Vacancy Defect in Diamond Optically Detected Magnetic Resonance (NV ODMR) method used for identification of magnetic phases in the multi-phase alloys. Finally I present the results of structural and optical property studies of flux-grown reticular-merohedral twinned silicon exhibiting structural features of hexagonal lattice (publication in preparation).
