In this talk, I will discuss a new class of distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs) and subwavelength high-contrast gratings (HCGs) developed for mid-infrared optoelectronic applications. The first part of the presentation will focus on their role in the design and development of a novel type of laser: vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers based on the quantum cascade scheme (QCVCSELs). I will present the theoretical foundations, preliminary material growth, and the optical properties of these structures as determined by spectroscopic analysis. In the second part, I will address the use of HCGs as transparent electrodes. I will discuss the performance parameters already achieved-such as transparency and electrical conductivity-and outline the prospects for further improvements. This research has been conducted as part of completed and ongoing projects funded by the National Science Centre and the National Centre for Research and Development, in collaboration with Polish and European scientific institutions.
